Transferrin

Transferrin is a protein primarily synthesized by the liver. Its main function is to transport iron throughout the body, delivering it to cells that require it for various physiological processes, such as red blood cell production and oxygen transport. It acts as the principal iron-carrying protein in the blood, ensuring that iron is made available where needed while also preventing iron toxicity by binding excess free iron. The amount of transferrin in the blood reflects the body's capacity to transport iron.
