Lipoprotein(a), often abbreviated as Lp(a), is a type of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle that contains an additional protein called apolipoprotein(a). Its structure is similar to LDL cholesterol, but the presence of apolipoprotein(a) distinguishes it. Lp(a) levels in the blood are primarily determined by genetics and tend to remain relatively stable throughout an individual's life. It is routinely measured to assess an individual’s lipid profile and cardiovascular risk.
