HOMA-IR

Calculated insulin resistance index.

HOMA-IR, or Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance, is an index derived from fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels. It is used as a surrogate marker to estimate insulin resistance and the function of pancreatic beta cells. Insulin resistance occurs when cells in your muscles, fat, and liver don't respond well to insulin and can't use glucose from your blood for energy. To compensate, your pancreas makes more insulin. Over time, the beta cells in the pancreas can become exhausted, potentially leading to elevated blood glucose levels. HOMA-IR offers a non-invasive way to assess these physiological states.
