Fibrinogen

Coagulation and inflammation marker.

Fibrinogen, also known as Factor I, is a glycoprotein synthesized in the liver. It circulates in the blood plasma and is essential for blood clotting. During hemostasis, thrombin converts fibrinogen into fibrin monomers, which polymerize to form a mesh-like structure. This fibrin mesh traps platelets and red blood cells, forming a stable blood clot to stop bleeding. Beyond its role in coagulation, fibrinogen is also an acute-phase reactant, meaning its levels can rise in response to inflammation or tissue injury.
