Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), also known as Westergren ESR or VSG (Velocidad de Sedimentación Globular), is a non-specific test that measures the rate at which red blood cells (erythrocytes) in anticoagulated blood fall to the bottom of a vertical tube in one hour. This rate is influenced by the interaction of proteins, particularly fibrinogen, with the surface of red blood cells, affecting their tendency to aggregate and settle. An elevated ESR often indicates the presence of inflammation or infection within the body, although it does not pinpoint the specific cause or location. It is a general marker used to monitor disease activity.
