Male hormones

Total testosterone

Overall testosterone level.

Total testosterone is a steroid hormone produced primarily in the testes in males and, to a lesser extent, in the adrenal glands. It plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of male reproductive tissues and secondary sexual characteristics. Additionally, testosterone influences bone density, muscle mass, red blood cell production, and mood. The measurement of total testosterone includes both the testosterone that is bound to proteins in the blood, such as sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin, and the small fraction that circulates freely.
