Reticulocytes

Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells (erythrocytes) produced and released into the bloodstream by the bone marrow. They contain residual ribosomal RNA, which allows them to be distinguished from mature red blood cells. The primary function of red blood cells is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs. Reticulocyte counts serve as an indicator of bone marrow activity and its ability to produce new red blood cells, which is crucial for maintaining adequate oxygen delivery throughout the body.
