Myeloperoxidase

Vascular inflammation.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an enzyme primarily found in neutrophils, which are a type of white blood cell crucial to the immune system. MPO plays a role in the body's defense mechanisms, particularly in killing bacteria and other pathogens through the production of hypochlorous acid. Elevated levels of MPO have been associated with inflammation and oxidative stress, which can contribute to the development and progression of various cardiovascular conditions. Measuring MPO provides insight into specific inflammatory processes within the bloodstream.
