Microalbuminuria refers to the presence of abnormally high, though still small, levels of albumin in the urine. Albumin is a protein produced by the liver, and its presence in the urine can indicate that the kidneys are not filtering waste products from the blood as effectively as they should. Normally, the kidneys prevent albumin from passing into the urine. Sustained microalbuminuria can be an early sign of kidney damage, particularly in individuals with conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
