Mercury is a naturally occurring element that exists in various forms, including elemental, inorganic, and organic mercury compounds. It is present in the environment from both natural sources like volcanic activity and human activities such as industrial pollution and mining. Exposure to mercury can occur through contaminated food, particularly certain types of fish, as well as occupational exposure or dental amalgams. Once absorbed into the body, mercury can distribute to various tissues and organs. Blood mercury levels primarily reflect recent exposure to organic mercury, such as methylmercury, and can also indicate exposure to inorganic mercury.
