Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) refers to LDL particles that have undergone oxidative modification. This process involves a reaction between LDL and free radicals, leading to changes in the LDL particle's structure and function. Unlike native LDL, oxidized LDL is not readily recognized by the liver for clearance. It is implicated in the early stages of atherosclerosis, where these modified particles can accumulate within arterial walls and contribute to inflammation and plaque formation. Measuring oxidized LDL provides insight into the oxidative stress burden affecting lipoproteins.
