Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a class of antibody crucial for immune function. It plays a significant role in allergic reactions and defense against parasitic infections. While other immunoglobulins like IgG and IgM are abundant in the bloodstream, IgE is present in much smaller concentrations. The presence of IgE on the surface of mast cells and basophils, specific types of white blood cells, facilitates the release of inflammatory mediators when stimulated by allergens or parasites. This mechanism is fundamental to both protective immunity and allergic hypersensitivity.
