Herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 are common infections. HSV-1 is typically associated with oral herpes (cold sores), while HSV-2 is generally linked to genital herpes. Both can cause outbreaks involving blisters and sores. IgM antibodies are produced during an initial or recent infection, indicating the body's early immune response. IgG antibodies develop later and persist, signifying a past exposure or chronic infection. This test measures the presence of these specific antibodies in the blood, helping to determine if a person has been exposed to either HSV-1 or HSV-2.
