GGT

Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is an enzyme found in cells throughout the body, with the highest concentrations in the liver. It plays a role in the metabolism of glutathione, a significant antioxidant. GGT is often measured in blood to assess liver health, particularly to detect cholestasis, which is the impairment of bile flow from the liver. Elevated GGT can indicate liver cell damage or bile duct obstruction, even before more specific liver enzymes like alkaline phosphatase show significant changes. It is a sensitive marker for hepatic dysfunction, though not always specific to its cause.
