Fructosamine is a glycated protein, primarily glycated albumin, reflecting average blood glucose levels over the preceding 2–3 weeks. This measurement is distinct from hemoglobin A1c, which offers a longer-term retrospective. Fructosamine forms when glucose molecules bind non-enzymatically to plasma proteins. The concentration of fructosamine is directly proportional to the average glucose concentration during the protein's circulating half-life. It is particularly useful in situations where red blood cell lifespan is altered, making hemoglobin A1c less reliable. Monitoring fructosamine aids in assessing glycemic control.
