Ferritin

Your body's iron stores.

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron, releasing it in a controlled manner. It is found in most cells, particularly in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. Small amounts of ferritin circulate in the blood, and these levels reflect the body's total iron stores. Measuring ferritin levels aids in assessing iron status, which is crucial for various bodily functions, including oxygen transport and cellular metabolism. As an acute phase reactant, ferritin can also be elevated during inflammation or infection, independent of iron levels.
