Chloride

Regulates acid–base balance.

Chloride is an essential electrolyte that works closely with other electrolytes like sodium and potassium to maintain the body's fluid balance, blood volume, and proper pH (acid-base balance). It is the most abundant anion (negatively charged ion) in the extracellular fluid, meaning the fluid outside of cells. Chloride plays a crucial role in nerve impulse transmission, muscle function, and digestion, being a component of stomach acid. Its levels are primarily regulated by the kidneys.
