Cystatin C is a protein produced by almost all nucleated cells in the body. It is freely filtered by the glomeruli in the kidneys and then reabsorbed and metabolized by the renal tubules. Due to its consistent production rate and its primary elimination through glomerular filtration, Cystatin C serves as a valuable endogenous biomarker for assessing kidney function, particularly the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). It is considered a more precise marker than creatinine in certain clinical situations.
