AST

AST, or aspartate aminotransferase, is an enzyme primarily found in the liver, but also present in other tissues such as the heart, kidneys, and muscles. Its main function involves amino acid metabolism, where it catalyzes the transfer of an amino group from aspartate to alpha-ketoglutarate, producing oxaloacetate and glutamate. While it plays a vital role in cellular energy production, the presence of elevated AST in the bloodstream often indicates cellular damage, particularly within the liver, as this is where its concentration is highest.
