Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) is an enzyme found in various tissues throughout the body. In individuals with celiac disease, the immune system mistakenly produces antibodies against tTG, specifically IgA class antibodies. The anti-tTG IgA test measures the presence and quantity of these autoantibodies in the blood. This test is a primary screening tool for celiac disease, an autoimmune condition where gluten consumption leads to damage in the small intestine. Elevated levels suggest an immune response indicative of celiac disease.
