Aluminium

Chronic aluminium burden.

Aluminium (Al) is a ubiquitous light metal, naturally present in the Earth's crust, water, and air. Due to its prevalence, human exposure to aluminium is unavoidable through various sources including food, drinking water, medications, and some consumer products. While often considered benign, high levels of aluminium can accumulate in the body. Biological monitoring of aluminium aids in assessing an individual's exposure and body burden. This measurement is particularly relevant in occupational settings or for individuals with impaired kidney function, as the kidneys are the primary route for aluminium excretion.
