17-OH progesterone

17-OH Progesterone (17-OHP) is a C21 steroid hormone produced in the adrenal glands and, to a lesser extent, in the ovaries and testes. It is an important precursor in the biosynthesis of cortisol and androgens. The measurement of 17-OHP in blood is primarily used to screen for and monitor congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a group of genetic disorders that affect the adrenal glands' ability to produce hormones. Elevated levels may indicate specific enzyme deficiencies within the adrenal steroid synthesis pathway. Its concentration can fluctuate throughout the day and in response to physiological states like the menstrual cycle.
